Jim Axelrod is an American journalist, reporter, anchor, author, senior national correspondent, and chief investigative correspondent who currently serves at CBS News where he reports across all CBS News programs and platforms. He was one of CBS News’ embedded correspondents in Iraq and was the first TV reporter to broadcast live from Saddam International Airport after its takeover by American forces.
Furthermore, Axelrod is the anchor of the Saturday edition of “CBS Evening News” where he joined as a Miami-based correspondent in 1996 and later served in the network’s Dallas and New York bureaus. He also served as CBS News Chief White House Correspondent from 2006-2009 and was named National Correspondent in 2009.
Additionally, Axelrod has covered a wide range of stories, most notably as a reporter ‘embedded’ with the military during the war in Iraq and was the last reporter to leave with the military in December 2011. He has won several awards including the DuPont-Columbia Silver Baton for reporting on the recession’s effect on children and was honored with a national Emmy Award for coverage of the Washington, D.C. sniper siege.
Jim also received a Peabody Award for his series on West Virginia’s opioid addiction crisis, and an Edward R. Murrow for his reporting on the genetic testing industry.
