Nikki Battiste’s IVF and infertility story

While narrating her story, Nikki admitted to knowing little about reproductive health, fertility, and infertility until it became her life.

“I now know that, after age 42, fertility for women essentially falls off a cliff. We had started trying to have a child right before I turned 39, and we got pregnant naturally and quickly. Eleven weeks later, I miscarried.

Later that year, we got pregnant again, also naturally and quickly. Beau was born to me at the age of 40. When the COVID-19 epidemic hit in 2020, that was.

We had always hoped to have two children — possibly even three — and, naively, never really worried about facing infertility. After Beau was born, more aware of my age, we decided to try again about a year later. I got pregnant, again naturally and quickly, for a third time, at age 41, but miscarried at nine weeks.

I remember doing a “CBS Evening News” live shot minutes after realizing I was miscarrying” she said. Battiste had started bleeding just before she had to get in front of the camera. Furthermore cried privately, then kept telling herself to just get through the live shot, to stay composed and focused.

“Live television does not wait. I got through it, then called my husband and OBGYN. Miscarriage is another time we suffer in silence – and often feel shame”. Battiste emotionally narated

Nikki Battiste explains the IVF process

Battiste began; “Let me describe how IVF works. Hormone shots are administered every two weeks or so to encourage the growth of the follicles in a woman’s ovaries.

One follicle typically releases one egg in a menstrual cycle after about a month. IVF attempts to increase the number of follicles that are actively producing eggs so that more eggs can be collected at once and fertilized in a laboratory.

Every other day during the two weeks I received the shots, I made the two-hour roundtrip drive to Columbia Fertility Center for blood testing and ultrasounds to monitor the size and development of my follicles. We performed an egg retrieval, which is a surgical operation to retrieve the eggs from ovaries when Dr. Forman believed as many follicles as possible were at a size where they would develop an egg.

There are a few steps after retrieval before trying to get pregnant. Typically, the quantity of eggs that potentially lead to pregnancy decreases with each stage.

In most cases, not all eggs that are retrieved are fully developed. Although not all eggs normally fertilize successfully, those that do can be fertilized in a lab with sperm. It takes roughly a week to determine how many of the fertilized eggs develop into blastocysts, the earliest stage of the embryo.

Some in the IVF process choose to then have the embryos genetically examined before going to the next step of transfer to a uterus. Because of my age at the time, we decided to have pre-genetic testing. Each embryo had a 20% chance of being viable, according to Dr. Forman.

Both were not. I was damaged. My resolve was now being put to the test.

I made the decision to tell my tale at that point. I knew I had to talk about how frequently IVF fails, and how challenging it would be to do so. According to Dr. Forman, statistically, it fails more frequently than it succeeds.

I proposed to Shawna Thomas, executive producer of “CBS Mornings,” that we undertake a fertility series covering menopause, IVF, egg freezing, family planning, and so on. I assured her that I would still tell my story, whatever the result. She spoke without hesitation and “Let’s get going. It’s very significant.”

My insurance would have been exhausted after the third IVF cycle, but we persisted. I had seven eggs removed, and one embryo resulted. The embryo underwent genetic testing, and fortunately, it was viable! We were ecstatic.

A month later, we made the decision to try a fourth round in the hopes of obtaining a second viable embryo. It too fell short. That was the financial end for us.

The embryo was then transferred, which is the process by which it is put into a uterus. According to the National Institutes of Health, there was a 60% probability that the transfer would be successful because our embryo had undergone genetic testing.

In November, we made the decision to transfer one healthy embryo. After a painful 10-day wait, a pregnancy test could finally be performed.

I’ll always remember that phone call. I only recall hearing Dr. Forman exclaim, “Good news!” While my husband and I were standing in our kitchen and Dr. Forman was on the phone, I sobbed uncontrollably.

We were smugly overjoyed. It’s a girl, too. a daughter and a son. How fortunate are we that it worked?.”

Nikki is 22 weeks pregnant now, and still cannot believe it.
