Matt has been a weather forecaster in Colorado Springs and the southern Colorado region for a long time.
One of Matt’s previous jobs was at Boulder’s National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). His scientific research on thunderstorms as part of an automated tracking and forecasting system has resulted in multiple published articles.
During the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, the NCAR Thunderstorm AutoNowcaster was utilized to forecast thunderstorms. Moreover, some of its components are still used today in local National Weather Service offices around the nation as thunderstorm analysis tools.
Before moving to Colorado Springs in September 2001, Matt was employed as the weekend meteorologist at KRDO NewsChannel 13, the CBS affiliate in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He previously served as the weekend meteorologist at KGWN-TV.
Matt was elevated to the position of chief meteorologist later in the year after being appointed to the weekday evening position in April 2005. Further, Matt became the first meteorologist in southern Colorado to be certified as a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist by the American Meteorological Society in October of that same year.
In 2014, Matt left television to work as the director of communications for School District 49. Moreover, Matt oversaw the marketing, communication, public relations, and media relations initiatives for District 49 by using an open, two-way communication approach.
Matt participated in the district’s efforts to build new processes and promote continual improvement. Under his direction, the communications department of District 49 won multiple awards from the Colorado School Public Relations Association, including two Medallion Awards for overall excellence.
