His parents, who are Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina natives, were raised and born there. In 1964, they relocated to California.

His parents separated when he was eight years old. Regarding the divorce, Ferrell stated: “As a child, I used to be the kind that would say, ‘Hey, look at the bright side! We’ll celebrate Christmas twice.” Both parents were dedicated to their children, and the divorce was handled amicably. His father’s profession presented the largest challenge.
His earnings were inconsistent due to his career in the show industry, and he would frequently spend months away from home. Because of his upbringing, Ferrell decided he would rather have a reliable career than pursue a career in the show industry.
Upon receiving his B.A. in sports information in 1990, it became clear that broadcasting was not what he wanted to do. He started working as a hotel valet, and on his second day there, he tried to drive a van under a low beam, tearing off the baggage rack from the top.
Moreover, he was a Wells Fargo teller as well, but he was insufficient: $300 on the first day and $280 on the second; he wasn’t taking the money; he was just irresponsible and prone to mistakes. Encouraged by his mother to follow his interests, Ferrell relocated to Los Angeles in 1991. After a successful audition, he spent time honing his improvisational abilities as a member of the comedic group The Groundlings.
