He has been a presenter for National Nine News and later Seven News and was one of the few Australian weather presenters on free-to-air television with a degree in science, together with Magdalena Roze and David Brown.
Furthermore, Gell is an active spokesperson on environmental and media issues and has served extensively with industry and NGOs to position clients in the media and with the public. Moving to the Nine Network in 1988, he was innovative as a designer and producer of television weather presentations for 15 years until 2003 when he was replaced by Livinia Nixon.
