Actress, comedian, singer, and songwriter Mary Nell Steenburgen is an American. She began her acting career in the 1978 Western comedy film Goin’ South, having studied at New York’s Neighborhood Playhouse in the 1970s. After starring in Jonathan Demme’s 1980 comedy-drama Melvin and Howard and Time After Time in 1979, Steenburgen went on to win both the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy.
